No love for women's tennis

Here's the linkline from Fox News:

Wife Accuses James Bond Actor George Lazenby of Death Threat, Offering Toddlers Alcohol

Whoa.  Somewhere in the back of my mind, I recalled that George Lazenby wasn't just married to some nobody.  And sure enough:

It's getting ugly between former James Bond actor George Lazenby and his soon-to-be ex-wife, former pro tennis ace Pamela Shriver.

Shriver does tennis broadcasts for ESPN, and won multiple grand slam titles with Martina Navratilova.  I think she made it to a grand slam singles final (or maybe two) in her career as well.  She's probably in the Tennis Hall of Fame.  And it's just "Wife accuses James Bond Actor ..."?  I would have thought it would pack more punch and attract more readers to name both famous members of the pair.  I mean, I think Shriver is also part of the whole Shriver / Kennedy universe, and STILL she doesn't even get mentioned in the headline?  I suppose this is just another indication of how much of a niche sport tennis, and women's tennis, have become, though I would suspect that Lazenby's role as Bond in one movie would put him about on the same level of celebrity obscurity as a multiple grand slam doubles winner.

Thoughts of OJ...

OJ?  You mean, OJ Simpson?  Yes, indeed.  I see from the headlines this morning that singer (?) R. Kelly has been acquitted of having sex with a thirteen year old girl.  Despite the videotaped sex sessions.

So, I guess all those people who said that even if they had a videotape of OJ killing Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, they wouldn't convict him, really meant it.

My lovely wife's take is a bit different.  She just saw the start of this post, learning of the acquittal, and has concluded that the court system's mandate to seat a jury of 12 reasonable people has to be viewed as an unachievable failure.  No word from her on what comes next should we abandon the jury system.

Why would someone plant a false story about Tiger Woods buying a house?

I noticed a small story in yesterday's sports news that indicated The New York Post reported Tiger Woods had bought a house in Southampton, New York, for $65 million.  Kind of surprising to me as I believe he is also in the process of relocating from his current home in Florida to a home I think he is having built farther south in Florida.  Why would he want to throw down another load of money on property in Southampton at this point?

Turns out maybe he's not.  The story this morning:

Tiger Woods did not buy a $65 million waterfront compound in Southampton, New York, as the New York Post reported, the real estate broker who handled the sale said today.

Followed after the string of denials, including from Woods' agent, with this:

“We stand by our story,” Col Allan, the Post's editor-in- chief, said in a statement issued by his publicist, Steven Rubenstein.

So is this a case of Woods having bought the property, but he is not "technically" the buyer as it is owned by another entity he owns and/or controls?  Or is there in fact a completely different anonymous buyer as the story this morning seems to indicate?  Maybe it's nothing more than a wild rumor about a big celebrity that got out of hand and wound up in the paper, and now the paper doesn't want to climb down from it for some reason.  But if the paper had it wrong initially, it seems to me they are making it much worse for themselves by sticking by the story.
